The soldier tipped his hat at her and pretended to leave. He had every intention of following her. Where he grew up, you were taught to take care of the women.

"He's over there. IF you tell anyone he's alive, I will kill you and him. In return for your child, you are going to be my personal maid."

After a little bit more walking Rose heard his footsteps. "I know you're there my knight in shining armor." She was silly and fun.

Gabriel smiled, "It must be your beauty fair maiden I can't stay away." He played along.

"Well, you best be on your way then I've had quite enough suitors today. They drove me to drink!" She laughed. "On second thought you're the most handsome yet. You may stay."

Emilie nodded slowly but went immediately to her child.

Tavington smiled slightly, "We will be camping here for a few weeks. You will be living here with me."

"Why are you doing this?" Emilie whispered as she held her son tightly to her chest.

"What? Why am I doing what?" Tavington replied as he took off his hat and coat and let his hair loose from the ribbon holding it back.

"Being kind to me..."

Gabriel laughed pleasently.

"Hand me that, will you?" He said avoiding the question and pointing to a clean shirt.

Emilie did so. Her face registered surprise at the slight jolt her heart gave when her hand touched his.

"Where's the boys father?" He asked breaking the silence.

"Aye, so is my brother." Rose said as they walked.

"He died." Emilie responded as she found a comb and started running it through his curls.

"How?" Tavington asked as he shifted to get comfortable.

"Fighting this war." She muttered.

He nodded slowly. He himself had made many women widows.

"What were you doing out so late?" Rose asked.

"He wasn't fighting at all. He'd been discharged." She hissed at Tavington.

Rose smiled, "I'm sorry then I must be interupting your evening with some bar wench." She teased.

Gabriel laughed, "No. I don't like drinking that much in these times."

"Why's that?" She asked curiously.

Emilie suddenly remembered that this man held her child's life in his hand, "I'm sorry William. I just...I loved him a great deal."

"Perhaps you could love me a fraction of that." Tavington said softly.Emilie raised an eyebrow.

Gabriel sighed, "Where do you live? I would feel much better if I got you home safely."

"I doubt that." Emilie said shortly.

Emilie looked at him curiously, "So you kidnapped my child and me just so you could one day marry me? And if I don't decide to love you, then what? You kill us?"

"You don't want to know." Rose sighed, "Me and my brother didn't want to."

"Of course you didn't. You always get everything you want." Emilier snapped.

Tavington frowned, "I didn't kill your husband! Not on purpose anyway. Please don't-"

"DON'T WHAT? He is dead and whether you set that fire or not, he won't be coming back ever."

Gabriel nodded, "I suppose I shall stop here. I will watch you to make sure you make it inside."

"There are many widows." Tarvington mumbled. He knew it was the wrong to say but couldn't think of anything else.

"I wouldn't marry you EVER." Emilie whispered fiercly before she walked to the opposite side of the tent. Tavington stood and followed her.

"Believe it or not but I've loved you since I first laid eyes on you." He said softly as he let his hand brush hers softly.

A man pulled the tent door open and looked at Tavington, "We're prepared to go over the battle strategies, sir."

"It can wait until morning." Tavington replied. The man looked slightly confused so Tavington nodded at Emilie.
